LEARN THE ‘WHY’ BEFORE THE ‘HOW’

This hands on, skill building 5-day cutting program is designed to prepare future stylists with the right message from the very beginning. It’s not just about learning how to cut hair - it’s about building strong habits, understanding intention, and developing the confidence to create haircuts that are both technically sound and emotionally connected to your clients.

Whether you're a 1st–3rd year apprentice or a new senior stylist stepping onto the salon floor, this course combines essential theory, classic salon-ready haircuts, and hands-on practice to help you understand not just how to cut hair - but why.

Your Introduction to Haircutting

HOW WE’VE UPDATED THE START.ME.UP PROGRAM

We’ve evolved the START.ME.UP program to ensure that every stylist begins their journey with clarity, structure, and purpose. By focusing on the WHY first, we eliminate the need to correct bad habits later. This program is built to set you up for success, giving you the tools, techniques, and mindset to grow with confidence.

Think of this program like a gym workout. You don’t attend one session and expect your body to transform. You need consistent training and the right food plan to see results. Haircutting is no different. You can’t expect to cut hair confidently without knowing how to hold your scissors correctly, how to section with purpose, or how to follow a formula that leads to success. This course gives you that structure, that repetition, and that clarity, so you can grow with precision and intention.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

Across five full days, you’ll be guided through the core principles of haircutting, working on classic shapes and techniques that translate directly to the salon. Each day builds upon the last, reinforcing your understanding and sharpening your skills.

You’ll learn to:

Draw and map haircut sections
Understand and apply sectioning patterns
Work with correct combing, elevation, and hair direction
Hold scissors and tools with precision and comfort
Understand the three essential techniques: Line, Layer, Graduation
Understand each of the three shapes. Round, Triangle, Square and what they offer
How to apply & combine different shapes and techniques to a haircut
Understand bone structure and head zones for client suitability
Position your body and your client for optimal control and results
The afternoon of day 5 you will design your own short haircut using all the knowledge you have gained over the last 5 days

DAY 1: FOUNDATIONS

DAY 2–4: CLASSIC HAIRCUTS

Each day begins with a PowerPoint Presentation to introduce the haircut focus and theory.

Two classic haircut per day (Focus on, Line – Layer – Graduation)
Draw and map haircut sections
Body positioning
Demonstration + guided hands-on cutting
Focus on shape, technique, and suitability
Elevation, hair direction, and mapping

DAY 5: INTEGRATION & CONFIDENCE

This final day is all about bringing everything together. Stylists will revisit the key principles, techniques, and shapes introduced throughout the program and apply them in a complete haircut project. It’s a chance to integrate theory with practice, reinforcing the habits and understanding developed over the previous four days.

Morning – Short haircut combining graduation & layer
Afternoon - Final haircut – you design your very own short haircut. This will be judged. The winner will receive a pair of Tokami Scissors valued at $600 from their Journey Collection.
Personal feedback and development planning

By the end of Day 5, stylists should feel empowered—not just to cut hair, but to do so with purpose and emotional connection. It’s the moment where everything clicks, and confidence begins to take root.

Payee Agrees to:
- Total payments are to be made in agreement with the selected payment options outlined in this agreement under the title payment options.
- I and/my nominated attendees agree to commit to five workshops of cutting classes with B.EDUCATED for the agreed entire duration of classes.
- If I or one of my nominated attendees’ decides not to continue with the program after commencement begins, I will pay 50% of the course value on behalf of myself or my nominated OR replace the absent attendee with another attendee.
- If I or one of my attendees cannot attend a class, I may have someone else attend on my behalf where they can use your allocated mannequin head or supply their own mannequin head.

This advanced haircutting course runs over three full-day sessions, spaced three weeks apart, giving you time to absorb, reflect, and apply what you learn between each stage. It’s designed for confident third-year apprentices and experienced hairdressers who are ready to push creative boundaries and elevate their technical skillset.

Perfect for those who have completed the START.ME.UP and or BASE Fundamentals Cutting Program and cutting with confidence. The Advanced Cutting Edition takes your foundational knowledge to the next level. You’ll explore contemporary and advanced haircutting techniques, working with both scissors and razors, and applying wet and dry cutting methods, freehand cutting, and disconnection to create movement, balance, and shape.

MORE THAN TECHNIQUE

This course isn’t just about haircutting—it’s about building a deeper emotional connection with the hair. You’ll be encouraged to think beyond the technical and connect with the hair’s natural flow, texture, and response. This connection allows you to work with greater sensitivity and intention, transforming each haircut into a dialogue between your hands and the hair.

You’ll also learn how to map the haircut from beginning to end, creating a clear pathway that supports consistency and creativity. This structure gives you the freedom to apply your own individual style to each haircut, allowing your personality and artistic voice to come through in your work.
